Be Good to Your Neighbor

Text: Leviticus 19:13-18

The first five books of the bible are known as the books of the law. Leviticus is the third of the law books written by Moses. Its general purpose is to outline God's rules and regulations for his chosen people in worship to him and in community with others. Specific instructions are given to the priests regarding atonement and offerings. God is holy, so His people are required to live holy. Leviticus can be likened unto a father giving instructions to his children. The children must submit to the instruction of the father who covers, supports, and protects them. Disobedience removes the covering, obfuscating the inheritance of the child. God requires our obedience!

In this passage, the Israelites were instructed to be good to their neighbors. A neighbor is not defined here as someone that lives in close proximity. Rather, a neighbor is anyone we come in contact with. When we are neighborly, we project God's love for humanity. He commands us to love thy neighbor as thyself (v. 18).

There are six imperatives given for our personal conduct in community with each other:
  1. Do not cheat or rob your neighbor by withholding payment for work already completed (v. 13).
  2. Do not make fun of the disabled, especially the deaf and blind (v. 14).
  3. Do not be unfair to a certain group of people by showing favoritism to another (v. 15).
  4. Do not gossip or reveal secrets that could damage the life and reputation of another (v. 16).
  5. Do not have hatred for your neighbors even when there is a disagreement or disapproval (v. 17).
  6. Do not hold a grudge or retaliate, but treat your neighbor the way you want to be treated (v. 18)
We must be mindful of our conduct if we are to live a holy life in community with others. We are compelled to show love and kindness if we wear the Christian name.

Prayer:
Father, forgive me for my disobedience. Help me to be a good steward of your love as I live in community with others. I pray for your support and protection. I submit to your instruction and guidance for my life. Amen!
