Before Jesus left, He instructed His disciples not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for the "Promise" of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:4). The disciples waited for ten days from the time of His ascension until the Day of Pentecost. They were all with one accord in one place (Acts 2:1). Suddenly there was a sound from heaven...and they were all filled (Acts 2:2-4). What Jesus had promised became a reality. Peter then explained what had just been witnessed, quoting from the prophet Joel and David. Many have pointed to this event as the birth or the beginning of the church as we now know it.
What was even more significant was what started happening in the hours that followed. That day about three thousand souls were added (Acts 2:41). A revival of souls had broken out! Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common (Acts 2:44). A community of believers – Christians – had been birthed and would share everything together.
In this instance, all things happened within the purview of Christian fellowship. We must always cherish the moments we have in the company of our faith community. There is something powerful about coming together and being in one accord.
May we learn to be united in faith, in love, and in Christ.
Prayer
Father, I thank you for sending Jesus to die for my sins. I also thank you for your Holy Spirit and the power of Pentecost. You have placed me in a loving fellowship and for this I am grateful. Help me to share your love with others. Amen!
