"...man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord doth man live" (De. 8:3).
During this recounting of history, Moses wanted to prepare the new generation for the promised land. The children of Israel did not have a Bible as a point of reference. Moses served as a mediator between God and the children of Israel. If God needed to speak, He would speak through Moses or signs and wonders. The new generation had much to learn and understand. Their ancestors, the "Exodus Generation," had forfeited their inheritance through disobedience and unbelief (Heb. 3:18-19); they would not see the promised land. God used Moses to remind them of how He led them "these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no" (De. 8:2).
You must not ignore what God has done for you. Delivering you out of the bondage of sin is a big deal to Him. He has led you to this point in your life for a reason. Do not forfeit your inheritance because of disobedience. Keep the commandments of the Lord, walk in His ways, and fear him (De. 8:6). There is a blessing that awaits on the other side of the wilderness. If not for you, for your children and your children's children. God can always provide manna, but what He really wants is to have a relationship with you.
Prayer
Dear God, I desire a closer relationship with you. I do not want to forfeit your blessing. Help me to live in union with your word. Amen!
