TEXT: GENESIS 1:1-5
1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. 2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. 3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. 4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. 5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
Ex nihilo is Latin for "out of nothing." The creative genius of God was on display from the beginning. He created everything out of nothing. All the artistry of Da Vinci, Van Gogh, and Michelangelo could not compare to the tapestry of earth. With such intention God started forming the earth, filling the void, and dispelling darkness with light – a mere reflection of His glory.
Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.—Hebrews 11:3
To imagine so small a thing as a bee, or fly, a grain of corn, or an atom of dust, to be made of nothing, would stupify any creature in the consideration of it; much more to behold the heavens with all the troop of stars, the earth with all its embroidery, and the sea with all her inhabitants of fish, and man, the noblest creature of all, to arise out of the womb of mere emptiness.—Stephen Charnock
These verses should ignite worship from the created to the creator. For a declaration has been made in the expanse of all creation that God is to be glorified.
The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.—Psalm 19:1
The earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. For he hath founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the floods.—Psalm 24:1-2
Prayer: Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory, and honour, and power; for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.—Revelation 4:11
