Care for the Needy

Text: Deuteronomy 15:7-11

The children of Israel were a great nation under God. They increased abundantly, and multiplied... (Exodus 1:7). With such growth, poverty was eminent. God instructed Israel to be generous and not to give out of convenience. They had not yet reached the Promise Land. God needed to instruct them on what was required upon entering.

God gives two basic commands in caring for the poor and needy:
  1. We must not be cold-hearted (v. 7).
  2. We must not shut our hand but open it wide (v. 11).
How often do we pass someone in need at the expense of our own happiness and convenience? Are we following his commands? God commanded that we must give what is sufficient. All needs must be met within the community, by the community. Unfortunately, in our society, those who have material wealth often take advantage of the poor and needy.

As Christians, we must learn to share, care, and to be kind. For the Lord thy God shall bless thy works and in all that thou puttest thine hand unto (v. 10).

Prayer
Father, forgive me for not sharing with others in my community. Thank you for your blessings over my life. Help me to open my hands wide to my neighbors, the poor, and the needy. Amen!
